How to Make Solar Panels - Making Your Own Solar Panel at Home

How to Make Solar Panels - Making Your Own Solar Panel at Home

Solar panels are available in the market today, which are made of high quality and processed silicon. However, plenty of people are now looking on how to make solar panels for their own projects, residential or home use, and is ideally suited to a small household.

Is it difficult to make solar panels?

Solar panels can be easily made at home by making use of diy (do it yourself) homemade solar panel guides, which are available on the internet today, or making use of kits which are easily available at electrical stores nowadays. Those who have prior experience in fixing up electrical equipments at home will find this task of making their own solar power panel at home extremely easy, although if you have a good guide, then there should be no problem.

If you already have solar cells :

The first and foremost requirement is to make use of photovoltaic cells. These cells are extremely light in weight, and are easy to transport from one place to the other.

You then need to choose on where you plan to make the solar panels and install it. Ideally, the backyard, garden of the house, or a flat rooftop are the correct places to install the solar panels, because they are the places that can receive the largest amount of sunlight available.

When you have chosen the right location, you can then start with the process to make solar panels. First, place the photovoltaic cells on the floor of the roof, garden, or the backyard, or whichever place you have chosen in making your own solar panel. These cells needs to be stacked one after the other in a horizontal arrangement, and should be installed at such an angle from the sun that it will be able to capture the maximum amount of sunlight and store it inside.

How do I get started in making a solar cell?

A solar cell makes up a solar power panel, so you need to know on how to make a solar cell. The required components in making your own solar panel are :

- sheet of copper
- two alligator clip leads
- a micro-meter that is sensitive enough to read currents between 10-15 micro-amperes
- an electric stove
- table salt, tap water, sand paper, and sheet metal shears

Now you need to cut a piece of the copper sheet with the exact size that of your electric stove. Thoroughly clean the copper sheet for any possible traces of sulphide or other corrosion.

Heat it on the burner and when it gets red-hot, the copper sheet will undergo color changes from pinking red to brown, and finally becoming a thick layer of black coat over it.

Then the stove and the copper sheet should be cooled off gradually. A layer of soft red cuprous oxide will be left over the copper sheet. Resist the temptation of removing all the black spots since this may damage the red cuprous oxide which is needed to make the solar cell work.

Then this sheet of copper should then be joined together with another sheet of copper of the same size. Use the alligator clips to join the two sheets together, and place it into a wide-mouthed jar or bottle. Ensure that the two sheets to not get in touch with each other. The copper sheet with red cuprous oxide should be connected to the negative terminal, and the clean copper sheet can be joined to the positive terminal. Saltwater should cover the bottom of the plates, but the clips of the two sheets at the top should be left dry.

The above procedures addresses the question on how to make solar panels at home. This can be used to generate electricity from the heat of the sun.

Now how does it do that?

The red cuprous oxide is a material type called a semiconductor. A semiconductor is an insulator, where electrons are bound tightly to their atoms and do not flow freely, and a conductor, where electricity can flow freely.

There is a gap in a semiconductor called a bandgap between the electrons that are bound tightly to the atom and the electrons that are farther from the atom which can conduct electricity and move freely. An electron must gain enough energy to move farther away from the nucleus outside of the this gap, since they can not stay inside the bandgap. And an electron outside that gap cannot lose a bit of energy and fall closer to the nucleus, and must lose enough energy to fall past the gap into the area where electrons are allowed.

When sunlight hits the cuprous oxide, it also hits the electrons. Some of these electrons gain enough energy to jump past the bandgap and become free to conduct electricity. These electrons then move into the saltwater, then into the clean copper sheet, into the wire, then through the meter, and then goes back to the red cuprous oxide sheet, and electricity is now generated. Now that you know on how to make solar panels, you can then make your home solar friendly, and cut your monthly electricity bills.

How to Make Solar Panels With Photovoltaic Effect

Learn How To Make Solar Panels

The energy from the Sun is absolutely FREE! No need to pay for costly electric bills when you have an alternative. Try to learn how to make solar panels for it is the best way to power up your home. You may not know it, but these solar frames are made up of cells such as the photovoltaic cells. PV cells collect the energy from the Sun and transform it into electricity or convert the same to heat.

The so-called photovoltaic effect was discovered in 1839 by then 19-year old Alexandre-Edmond Becquerel. However, the lad did not how to harness the solar power using the PV effect. Solar energy was put into use by Charles Fritts who successfully made the first solar cell in 1882. The first solar energy catcher was made of thin Selenium sheets coated with gold. Utilizing the cell for producing electricity and generating heat had been widely used since the early part of 1900.

How To Make Solar Panels

The term photovoltaic effect actually pertains to the physical process that the cell has to undergo to convert sunrays into electricity. Solar panels come in many various shapes, sizes, and styles so they can be applicable to as many different types of spaces, appurtenances or structures such as awnings, roofs, buildings, apartments, greenhouses, condos, residential homes or fields.

No matter what the shape or size is, there seems to a common pattern on how to make solar panels. Depending on the kind of materials used in the making of the energy frames, you can come up and make money with the following form such as the:

Amorphous Silicon Panel

This class has the lowest electricity return rate in comparison to any type of sun-powered generator. It is not made with crystalline silicon thus its electricity return rate is just between five percent to six percent. The Amorphous silicon panel comprises of a piece of semi conductive metal such as copper and a thin strip of silicon on top that is connected to some pieces of metal.

String Ribbon Silicon Panel

The string ribbon type is built just like the polycrystalline silicon pane with about the same rate of electricity return. The difference between the two is that the photovoltaic cells in a string ribbon silicon panel is made up of thin strips of silicon which are attached to metallic bars connecting the strips to make one cell rather than using a solid silicon square.

In terms of investment cost, the price of a string ribbon silicon panel is lower than that of a polycrystalline silicon panel. You might want to know how to make solar panels with string ribbon silicon because of its tempting cost.

Polycrystalline Silicon Panel

From the Greek word poly which means multi, the polycrystalline silicon comprises of multiple individual photovoltaic cells with metallic conductors tucked at the sides of the panel for better conductivity and to help excite electrons. The panel renders electricity return of approximately twelve percent to fourteen percent. It is also observed that this type of panel is not as efficient as the Monocrystalline type of silicon solar panel.

So far, this is the cheapest kind of solar panel and makes it too easy for consumers to buy. Its maintenance cost is relatively lower compared to that of the Monocrystalline solar panel for the simple reason that you just replace or repair the individual cell that has been damaged without the need of replacing the entire panel.

Monocrystalline Silicon Panel

Mono means single, thus this made up from a single-crystal sheet of silicon with metals tucked to the ends to excite the electrons and to increase conductivity. This type is tested to be more effective and can be considerably more expensive compared to the others, but it can return fourteen percent to eighteen percent electricity rate.

Your questions, comments, suggestions or recommendations on how to make solar panels with photovoltaic effect are WELCOME! Thank you for reading.

Solar Panel: Useful Information

Learn How To Make Solar Panels

Solar panels are increasingly gaining popularity these days. For years, we have been using fossil fuels and other non renewable resources of energy. These scarce resources have been exhausted to a level where everybody is complaining of imbalance in environmental conditions. Geologists say that most of the natural disasters and the global warming are a result of human errors like enormous forest cutting, soil erosion and other similar activities.

Learn Here How To Make Solar Panels

This concern led to the finding of some renewable source of energy to save earth and serve as a cost effective method. This paved the way for solar panels that capture the heat of the Sun and convert it into electrical energy. This energy can be further utilized for our daily chores. It is a reliable, long lasting and a very cost efficient method that will save us not only from the irritating power-cuts but also from the huge electric bills.

The invention of solar panel was the result of a discovery in 1954 that stated the capacity of silicon to convert sun's energy into electric energy. Thus it was formed using photovoltaic cells (solar cells) containing silicon and these PV cells take care of the entire process of converting sunlight into electrical energy.

The best thing about solar panels is that once installed, they need little maintenance and cover up their initial cost in a few bills only. More the sunlight, greater will be the efficiency with a great life span of almost 20-30 years. Probably this is the reason why more and more people are adopting this method of power generation. After all who would not like to have an uninterrupted power supply and that too at a minimal cost.

With the rising popularity, the utility of solar photovoltaic cells is also increasing. Varied ways are being devised out where this alternative source of energy can replace the conventional methods. They are used for space crafts, solar heaters, solar cookers, battery chargers, cell phone chargers and I-pod chargers as well. Rather, one can charge the batteries using solar panels and can use them for power consumption in household, office or even on their recreational vehicles.

These cells can be customized as per the need of the client. More the power is required; bigger will be the size of the panel. Though a few people try to make solar panels on their own, it is always better to take a professional help. A professional guidance can help you understand how and where to place them so that one can get maximum benefit out of it. The professional can also explain that how a little effort like timely scratching of the dust and scrap from the panel can elongate the life and maintain the quality as well.

Solar Panels: Are They for You?

Learn How to Make Solar Panels

The concept of climate change has become a real, present danger, as evidenced by the major shifts in temperature and weather all over our planet. Although it is too late to stop it now, it is possible to keep things for getting worse. One major way to do this is to encourage the uses of alternative energy sources, instead of using fossil fuels to power our factories, cars and homes. These non-renewable, dirty, expensive energy sources can be replaced by other technologies, such as solar power. Solar power is produced by using solar panels, which are essentially conversion and storage devices for capturing solar energy and turning it into usable electricity. Many people want to do their part in saving the planet and saving themselves money on their light bills, too, but they know little about this important technology. Here are some key factors and concepts involved in the usage of solar power and panels.

Make Solar Own Solar Panels

Cost factors. The cost of a solar panel can vary widely; some people make their own, while others choose to buy pre-made panels and have them installed professionally. How much sunlight a panel can absorb, the efficiency at which it operates, etc., are all factors to consider when trying to save money and the environment. Here are some criteria that should be considered for cost-effective solar power:

Level of Sunlight: Obviously, the amount of solar power you can use depends on the amount and intensity of sunlight available. If you live in a place that has low levels of sunlight year-round, such as the Pacific Northwest region of the US, you may only get direct, sustained sunlight for a few days per year. This would make installing solar panels not as cost-effective. In order to get the most out of solar panels in places with low sunlight levels, you have to install more panels, and they should be powerful ones with a large energy storage and conversion capacity.

Size of Your Home: If you live in a smaller home with fewer rooms and appliances, you will find you get more use out of solar panels with a lower output level. Solar panels for a small to medium-sized home will cost anywhere between $500-$16,000, depending on the tech level of the panels. However, if your house is big, exceeding 5,000 square feet, you will have to shell out a significant sum of money, even if you opt for less-expensive solar panels.

Government Grants: The governments of some cities and states offer grants or tax incentives for installing solar panels. Check into these resources to see if you are eligible and take advantage of them if you are.

Technological Advances: Solar technology has become much more advanced over the last several years, in terms of overall cost and conversion/storage efficiency. There are also much wider arrays of choices in solar panel options, so you can use this buyer's market to your advantage, to keep costs down.
The Advantages and Disadvantages of Solar Panels

Since solar power is renewable, safe, and pure, making it one of the most environmentally-friendly energy sources. It is free, but the cost of the panels themselves can be prohibitive in the eyes of many. Here are some pros and cons of solar energy/panels, to help guide your decision-making process whether to go solar or not.

Pros:

Solar energy is produced by the sun, which makes it "free"-the only cost is to collect and transform it into usable energy. Once you have the panels installed, they can be used indefinitely, and the energy produced is completely free.

Solar panels require little maintenance once installed, and can work efficiently for years without needing updates or changes.

Solar panels remain efficient, even long-term: most solar panels will still operate at p to 90% of their original output, even after 20 years!

Requires no work on your part to manufacture power, no wasting money on electric bills
Cons:

Large houses need lots of panels to manufacture enough energy to make them cost effective to install.

Solar energy only is accessible during the day, meaning your panels must also be efficient for storing the energy as well as receiving and converting it.

All panels will have to be replaced after about 20-30 years; if you installed a bunch of them all at once, they will have to be replaced the same way, which can get very expensive.
Reflect on these issues and determine whether solar panels are a good investment for your home and situation. Although they can be expensive to purchase and install, there are alternatives to pre-manufactured panels. Although they are expensive up-front, they can easily work off the cost of their purchase an installation over the years. Technology is improving every day, but you do have to have some up-front capital to get started going solar. Consider all the options and make the best decision.

Make Solar Panels - 5 Steps You Can Use to Lower Solar Panel Cost

How To Male Solar Panels

Learning how to make solar panels is a sure-fire way of reducing your monthly utility bills and "going green". With the upward spiraling energy cost of conventionally fossil-fuel produced electricity, many residential homeowners are looking for alternative ways to reduce their energy consumption and create their own power through renewable resources. Individuals have looked into ways of how to build a solar panel, or construct an energy producing windmill and solar hot water system.

Learn How TO Make Solar Panels

Reduce Energy Demands - There was a time when only the wealthy could afford to purchase solar power systems capable of generating electricity. For the rest of us, our only avenue to decreasing our utility bills was to reduce the amount of energy our family home demanded. Many chose to do this by raising the temperature settings for their air-conditioning, and lowering the heating thermostat. While this solved the financial dilemma, for many it made living conditions uncomfortable. However, because of the lowering costs of photovoltaic solar cells, the working part of a solar panel, construction of low-cost solar panels is now available to anyone.

Sourcing the Materials - Though there are different methods for building solar panels, most have three components. Those include the photovoltaic solar cell, which through no moving parts, can transform the rays of the sun into usable direct current electricity. To protect the solar cell, it is necessary to assemble a container for housing, along with all the required wiring to transfer the electricity from the photovoltaic cell to whatever needs electricity. Additionally, you can fabricate a solar panel using a battery for storage, to draw electricity from after the Sun sets.

Taking Small Steps - Even a complex whole house solar power system is constructed using nothing more than connecting a series of small single solar power panels together. Using easy-to-understand schematics and drawings, simple detail guidelines and instructions, any do-it-yourself beginner can build solar panels capable of running lights and appliances. Taking the initial step of solar panel construction involves teaching yourself how a direct current (DC) solar power generating system works. With this knowledge, fabrication of a single solar panel takes just a couple of hours. Placing the unit in the sun instantly begins generating electricity.

Expanding Your System - Once you are satisfied that you have created an operable single solar power panel capable of generating power, you can build multiple single panels and connecting them together in a series, to generate enough power to offset the demand of purchased energy. Because you can expand your system as large as desired, it is possible to increase the electrical output whenever you are financially capable of producing more panels. This gives you the freedom to create the system as you can afford it, and still instantly reap all the energy benefits as it grows.

Freedom from Fossil Fuel Power - Many dedicated do-it-yourself individuals have created a solar electric-generating system large enough to completely remove themselves from the national electric grid. Some homeowners have accomplished this feat through the construction of a few solar panels at a time, using the savings on their reduced electric bill to fabricate additional units, saving even more money for more panels. One method is to design the system using a series of batteries to collect and store unused electricity for any electrical demand at a later time. Another method, involves using the local utility power grid as a place to store solar panel generated electricity during the day, to be used after the Sun has set.

Saving money on utility bills can be accomplished by managing solar power-generating panel cost, and expanding the size of your solar electric-generating power system from the savings created by a single or small group of panels. All the information necessary to construct simple to complex solar power generating systems can be downloaded online simply by searching for " DIY solar power panels information".

Timothy Lancester constantly seeks out quality information on do-it-yourself home solar power panel construction. He recommends DIY Solar Power System information as a key source for detailed schematic drawings, guidelines, information and instructions on fabricating and installing your own solar panels.

How To Make Solar Panels - Making Solar Panels For Your Home

How To Make Solar Panels For Your Home

A solar panel is a frame that contains cells that harness the sun's power to generate energy. This energy is converted to electricity, which can power up lights, electronic items and the like. You can buy ready-made solar panels but they come at an expensive price, which is why some people build their own panels.

Getting Started

Making solar panels yourself can be challenging, so you need to have patience and determination for this. In order to make a solar panel, you will need the following materials:

• Solar cells
• Plywood, 1 sheet
• Plexiglas, 1 sheet
• All-weather paint
• 1x1 inch lumber, 4 pieces
• Silicone sealant
• Solder and soldering iron
• Drill and screws
• Insulated copper wire, 2 strips
• Flat-tabbed wire
• Pencil and ruler

You can make your own solar cells but this will entail more time and effort. Just buy cells to make things easier for you and start working on the panel construction right away.

How to Make Solar Panels

Procedure

Now that you have solar cells, decide how many rows of cells you will need. This will help you determine the size of the plywood you need to cut. After cutting, apply all-weather paint and let it dry. Then you can apply a second coating.

After the second coating dries, use the pencil and ruler to draw lines to guide the cells' arrangement. Make sure to leave a 3-inch border along the edges of the plywood.

Next, solder two flat-tabbed wires at the back of every cell. Make sure the length of the wire is double the length of a cell.

Arrange the cells on the plywood. Solder the wires at the back of one cell to the next so that they all become connected.

Put a drop of silicone sealant at the back of each sell to glue it onto the plywood. A small drop will do. Let the sealant dry.

Connect the positive lead of one cell to the negative lead of the next cell. Repeat this process until you have one positive lead and one negative lead left. Parallel connections generate power while more series connections build up more voltage.

As for the last two leads, solder each of them to separate the insulated copper wire. The length of this wire depends on how far the solar panel position is from the power system.

Remember the four pieces of 1x1-inch lumber; these will be the boards that you will place on the borders of the plywood. Glue them onto the front of the plywood (where the solar cells are placed) using the silicone sealant and let it dry.

Turn to the back of the plywood. Drill pilot holes through the wood into the 1x1-inch lumber, but make sure the drill does not puncture through the lumber. Screw the four pieces of lumber into place.

As for the positive and negative leads, drill a hole for each of them at the bottom borders for the wires to pass through. Fill the two holes with silicone sealant so that the wires are kept in place. Drill another hole at the bottom but do not put sealant in it. It will serve as a drain hole in case of condensation.

Place a sheet of Plexiglas over the solar panel. Glue it onto the borders using the silicone sealant and let it dry. Once dry, screw the Plexiglas into place on the borders.

Lastly, place the panel in your desired position and connect the insulated copper wires to the home power system.

At this point, your homemade solar panel is done. Make sure to practice safety measures when doing this project. Remember: one solar cell generates a minimal amount of electricity. If you want to generate more electricity, you will have to create more panels.
